Motorola Solutions intros AME 2000, an Android-based secure platform

The name is 2000. AME 2000. That’s the James Bond-style intro we think Motorola Solutions should prep for the company’s latest Android-based device that comes with a locked down, user-friendly platform. Mind you, we’re not talking about the Motorola that was acquired by Google last year, but the smaller company that worked as a separate Enterprise Mobility Solutions and Public Safety division for the old Moto until 2011. With that out of the way, let’s focus on the AME 2000 Secure Mobile Solution.

Plex for Android can finally play local files

Am I the only one surprised to hear Plex for Android actually couldn’t play local files in the past? Plex, the service meant to liberate your media, apparently was limited by the boundaries of your network. This changes with the latest update, though. Plex has been updated to version 6.0, which includes one major improvement – the player can now reproduce local media files from the phone or SD card. Supported formats include MP4, MKV, AVI, WMV, and WMD.

The Amazon Fire Phone wasn't a good phone, but did Google help kill it?

The Amazon Fire Phone might be the online retailer’s most expensive mistake, touting a 3D display and its Fire OS take on Android. Amazon’s handset reportedly cost the firm over $170 million in the quarter following its launch. But new emails have surfaced, suggesting that manufacturers refused to ship Amazon’s platform for fear of angering Google. An email from a manufacturer to Amazon executives revealed that the brands didn’t want to “piss off Google” by shipping devices running Fire OS, The Telegraph reported (soft paywall).

Video: how did Samsung make the Galaxy S7 water resistant?

One of the coolest features of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge is their water resistance. The phones can be safely immersed in water, within certain limits: in line with their IP68 certification, the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are guaranteed to resist submersion in up to 1.5 meters (roughly 5 feet) of water for up to 30 minutes. But how is this water resistance accomplished? The Galaxy S4 Active has an IP67 rating - but what does that mean?

The update also lets you sign into websites with your fingerprint or PIN code. You might not need to buy a device like the Nest Hub Max to put a smart display in your home — at least, not if you have a Chromebook.

Android Marshmallow problems: troubleshooting guide

Table of contents The Android Marshmallow update may have only rolled out to just over one percent of Android devices but that number is about to pick up significantly, with Samsung releasing Marshmallow for the Galaxy S6 and LG pushing it out for the G4 and G3. Nexus users and Moto X Pure Edition owners have been enjoying Android 6.0 for a while though. While Android 6.0 Marshmallow brings a lot of great changes to Android, it’s not without at least a few flaws.
