Google revenue for Q4 2018 soars, but there's a dark cloud on the horizon

Alphabet just published its financial report for the fourth quarter of 2018. Google revenue soared even higher than Wall Street estimates, bringing in over $39.2 billion, representing a 22 percent increase as compared to the same quarter in 2017. That totals $136.8 billion in revenue for 2018, up 23 percent over the whole of 2017. Google’s revenue within each of its main segments grew in the previous quarter, including ad revenue, properties revenue, and even its “other” revenues, which includes things like Pixel devices and services like Google Cloud.

Here's how often you use floating app windows (if at all)

Floating app windows have been around on Android for years now, allowing you to open and use apps while still doing other things on your phone. It joins split-view multitasking as one of the more practical yet under-the-radar features on the platform. We’ve already asked Android Authority readers about how often they use split-view multitasking, but what about floating app windows? We posed this question last week and here’s how readers responded.

History of the Nexus family

“The Google phone is coming, the Google phone is coming!” Towards the end of 2009 the prospect of a Google-branded Android smartphone was lighting up the tech blogosphere. Google had already been selling the Android Dev Phone 1 to developers, but it was basically a SIM-free, unlocked HTC Dream. The idea that Google might sell its own smartphone directly to consumers was genuinely exciting. Thankfully, when it did arrive, it wasn’t called the Google Phone.

How to use Carbon App Sync and Backup

Most people neglect backing up their devices. Normally this isn’t so much of a problem as contacts and calendar events are automatically stored in the cloud, and Google can backup device settings too. To the other extreme, we have the likes of Titanium Backup, a comprehensive backup application for power users with root privileges. If you find that the built-in Google Backup isn’t comprehensive or reliable enough for you and that Titanium Backup is overkill for you, then Carbon App Sync and Backup, made by the same team who made ClockworkMod Recovery, can provide an excellent intermediate-level solution.

LG G8 review: Gimmicks Galore

The LG G8 ThinQ is a perfectly nice phone, but LG perhaps played it too safe. The phone is indeed a powerful update to last year's G7 as far as specs and performance are concerned, and yet LG has done nothing to make the phone truly shine. The G8 ThinQ is a serviceable device for those who take the vanilla approach to life. Table of contents Using the LG G8 ThinQ made me feel like a failed Jedi or an inept Dr.

Live Caption, one of Android's best features, is being tested on Windows 11

TL;DR Microsoft is testing Live Captions functionality in Windows 11 preview builds. This is mostly identical to Google’s own Live Caption feature in Android. This generates captions on-device for any content with audio. Google introduced Live Caption functionality to Android back in 2019, allowing users to get locally generated captions for any video and audio content. This extended to recorded videos, podcasts, and more. Now, Microsoft has announced (h/t: Liliputing) that a new Windows 11 Insider preview build (version 22557) comes with a so-called Live Captions feature as well.

Redmi Note 7 Pro review: Stunning hardware, unpolished software

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro The Redmi Note 7 Pro is a really nice phone that offers some of the best hardware you can get at this price point. Unfortunately, software glitches mar an otherwise excellent phone. Ads strewn across the interface make for an intrusive user experience. Table of contents Xiaomi’s Redmi Note series has long been the most successful lineup for the company. Over the years, the series has struck a good balance between performance and price.

Samsung Galaxy S30 leaks in first crop of renders

TL;DR Reliable leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer (aka @OnLeaks) just posted renders that allegedly depict the Samsung Galaxy S30. The phone has a new camera design that makes the bump much more subdued. This is a very early leak for the Galaxy S series, suggesting Samsung could launch the phone earlier than usual. Earlier today, reliable smartphone leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer posted some images that he claims are of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S30.

Which one should you buy?

Zarif Ali / Android Authority With the introduction of the Galaxy S21 FE, Samsung has created a phone that offers a similar experience as the Galaxy S21, but at a lower price point. Samsung unveiled its Galaxy S21 series a year ago, and with its base model, the company cut a few corners to bring a device that was affordable and accessible while keeping most of its flagship qualities. With two devices so similar to one another, which should you buy?
