Add a 3D effect to your shots with Google Camera and Depthy

Google’s newly released Camera app comes with a nifty little feature called Lens Blur. The feature lets you select areas in a picture that you want to defocus, to imitate that special bokeh effect that you typically see on shots taken with high-end cameras. Polish developer Rafał Lindemann created Depthy, a tool that uses the depth map in Lens Blur shots to add a parallax effect to your images. So far, it’s more of a proof of concept, but the code is open source and freely available, meaning that it’s just a matter of time until someone creates the first app (live wallpaper?

Android customization - Screen Filter, dim your display to see in the dark

Sometimes, the pleasures of Android customization require that we put to use small, single purpose apps to get the job done right. One such app is called Screen Filter, who’s single purpose is to dim your display well beyond the lowest brightness setting on your device. As we go through our day, we often find ourselves with varying amounts of lighting to contend with, be it blaring direct sunlight or the dark of night.

Android on iPhone? Now it's possible, if you want it

Andrew Grush / Android Authority Although we firmly believe the Android vs iPhone war should be long dead by now, the ecosystems of the two devices are still very distinct from one another. A new development project, though, has a plan to bring the two systems closer by making it easy to get Android on iPhones. “Project Sandcastle,” as its known, has a brand new website up that gives you explicit instructions on how to get Android 10 on a handful of iPhones.

Best custom ROMs for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

We all know that what sets the Android OS apart from its competition is its open-source nature which gives us the ability to customize and tweak the interface to suit our own needs. Of course, the ability to create such “custom ROMs” requires a certain level of technical expertise which a lot of everyday users don’t have. Specialized teams of developers have been working hard to build such ROMs, that not only replace the existing interface your device features, but in most cases also enhance the overall performance of the device.

Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority Hadlee Simons / Android Authority The Poco M4 Pro shows that it’s not all about the perfect successor when it comes to budget-friendly 5G devices. It offers plenty of upgrades yet justifies its under £300 price point. In our review, we described the M4 Pro as well-rounded and praised the 50MP primary camera for its solid snaps in good lighting. However, the ultrawide option feels more like an afterthought, so be careful what you snap.

Chinese Galaxy S4 clone comes with built-in spyware that mimics Google Play

The dangers of buying so-called clones, cheap imitations of brand name smartphones, are relatively well known. From the lack of warranty, to the shoddy build and abysmal performance, buying a “replica” ends, in most cases, in regret. But there’s a more insidious danger that bargain hunters expose themselves to when buying a cheap no-name device – the risk of getting a phone that is infected with malware out of the box.

End of an era: the last Symbian phone

My first touch screen phone was an old Nokia 5233, which was pretty crude compared with today’s handsets. Never the less, it was Nokia’s Symbian OS which first wowed me as I swiped my way through the menus and widgets, wondering how I ever survived with just a keypad. Even though I could never imagine myself moving back to that creaking old handset, it’s a little sad that Nokia have announced that their 808 PureView phone will be their last phone to use the Symbian operating system.
