Verizon Hum turns your vehicle into a connected car

Those of us with older cars often feel envious of those with nifty connected cars, featuring OnStar and other similar services. We may not go and purchase new cars just to get those features, but Verizon has just announced a new product that could ease your dumb car pains. They call it the Hum. What exactly is this thing? Well, it’s actually a bundle with a couple products. The first component is a module that connects into your OBD (on-board diagnostics) port.

Over the past few years, people seem to have been voting with their wallets — big phones are here to stay. Unfortunately, companies are now spending fewer resources on making decent small phones. There just aren’t that many of them out there. I’ve been thinking a lot about this recently, mainly because Google’s upcoming Pixel 4a looks like the right size for me and I’ve been so far unimpressed with the Pixel 4 XL.

Google researchers reveal Poodle bug, capable of exploiting SSL 3.0 fallback

I have long suspected that poodles are really up to no good, and now I have proof. Today Google researchers published news of a new dreaded poodle (Padding Oracle On Downgraded Legacy Encryption) attack, which can effectively circumvent SSL protections, the same protocol that Heartbleed targeted earlier this year. The bug isn’t nearly as serious or far-reaching as heartbleed, but still a threat nonetheless. What does this bug do exactly? Basically SSL protects data that’s in transit between a website and a user, and so this bug could make it possible for an attacker to replace data in transit and open the door to all sorts of attacks.

Google testing Quick Settings shortcut in Android 11

If you want to check out your Quick Settings in Android, you first need to pull down the notification shade. Doing so will show you your notifications (obviously) as well as the six top-most Quick Settings on your list. To see the full list, you swipe down a second time. This might change, though, in Android 11. According to some code tinkering conducted by XDA Developers, Google could be testing a shortcut to quickly access Quick Settings without needing that double swipe.

How to start an incognito chat in Google Allo

By far one of the coolest features Google’s new Allo messenger brings to the table is the ability to chat in incognito mode. Allo’s incognito mode allows you to take advantage of expiring chats and private notifications. And since all your messages are end-to-end encrypted, they’ll only be seen by you and the person you’re talking to. Also, Google can’t read any of your messages, so you can’t use Smart Reply or Google Assistant.
